Protecting Our Customers from Check Fraud

At MRV Banks, protecting your finances is our top priority. Check fraud especially when checks sent through the mail are stolen or altered is a real and growing risk. Scammers often “wash” checks (using chemicals to remove or change details), steal them from mailboxes, or otherwise tamper with them. We want to help you stay safe by sharing what we’re doing and what you can do, including some free tools you can use right away.

How We’re Protecting You

  • Vigilant monitoring. Our fraud detection systems are designed to flag unusual or suspicious transactions so that we can take action quickly.
  • Strong partnerships. We work with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA), and other institutions to stay up to date on fraud trends, warnings, and best practices.
  • Clear customer support. If you ever suspect fraud, MRV Banks will help you report it, secure your account, and walk you through all the necessary steps.
  • Ongoing education. We regularly share resources and tips so you know how to protect yourself before fraud happens.

What You Can Do to Help Protect Yourself

Here are practical steps you can take to reduce the risk of check fraud:

  • Deposit or mail checks using post offices or secure collection boxes not unsecured home mailboxes.
  • Use permanent, non-washable ink when writing checks. Fill in all sections (payee name, amount in words and figures) so there are no blank spaces.
  • Regularly collect your mail and, if you’re away, request a mail hold from USPS.
  • Keep a close eye on your bank statements, transaction notifications, and check images.
  • Whenever possible, opt for electronic payment methods they tend to be safer and more traceable.
  • Contact MRV Banks immediately at 1-573-880-7444 if you see anything suspicious or if you believe a check has been tampered with.

Our Commitment

Fraud may be evolving, but so are the tools and practices we use to protect you. MRV Banks is committed to using strong detection systems, collaborating with national agencies, and giving you the resources (like the USPIS handout) so you feel empowered.
